Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter melted and slightly cooled for moisture
  • 1 large egg binds ingredients
  • 1 large egg yolk adds moisture
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract for flavor

Dry Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon salt enhances flavor
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda aid in leavening
  • ½ cup granulated sugar for sweetness and structure
  • 1 cup light brown sugar packed for moisture and flavor
  • 2 cups + 2 tablespoons all purpose flour provides structure

Add-ins

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips for richness and sweetness

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by melting the unsalted butter in a mixing bowl. Let it cool slightly to prevent cooking the eggs during mixing.
  • In the same bowl, add the salt and baking soda to the melted butter.
  • Combine the granulated sugar and packed light brown sugar into the butter mixture. Mix until well blended.
  • Crack the large egg and add the egg yolk into the mixture. Incorporate them well.
  • Pour in the vanilla extract and mix it in thoroughly.
  • Gradually sift in the all-purpose flour, gently folding it into the wet ingredients.
  • Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Baking

  • Spread the dough evenly into a greased 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Move the pan to a preheated oven and bake until the edges are golden brown and the center looks slightly underbaked, about 25-30 minutes.
  • Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan.

Notes

For chewier bars, avoid overmixing the dough. Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting to prevent crumbling.
